Basque Country in 2009: Unionist governments, nationalist majority

Through the vision of a former SNP leader the conclusion of the majority in favour of sovereignty crosses the red line of self determination and the way to independence is unable to be stopped by unionist forces. But the Basque Country is an exception to this kind of sentence.

Basque Country has a complex administrative division in two states, France and Spain. In France, inside the Department of low Pyrenees, Iparralde, Northern Basque Country, consists in 3 lands. On the other side, beside the mountains they are two Autonomous Communities: Foral Community of Navarre and Basque Country Autonomous Community. Inside this last community there are four governments and four parliaments: one for each territory inside (Araba, Biscay and Gipuzkoa) and the common institutions. So are the difficulties of ruling Basque land with the central governments in Madrid and in Paris, supervising every single lay and every single process.

In 2007, at the Foral Community of Navarre there was the possibility to bring power to a left wing government, retiring a 12 years ruling Popular Party. 26 parliamentarians are more than 24. They are mathematics. But the Socialist Party and President Zapatero surrended into the mass media forces, controlled by Popular Party, and maintained the right wing government… supported by his own party. Reason? Not to give power to Basque nationalists instead of maintaining in power the Spanish nationalists.

In 2009, on the last months, we had elections in the Basque Autonomous Community to decide the Basque Government, ruled by Basque Nationalists by 10 years in the person of Juan José Ibarretxe. There are 75 Basque parliamentarians: 25 each inside territory. Last elections the former Basque Government supporting parties won over 538 000 votes, and Spanish Unionist parties over 478 000 votes. But that “stability” of votes in territories with different population makes differences in this way: now the Basque nationalists have 36 seats and Spanish Unionists 39. So they have the Government. How? They illegalized a political option, the same they legalized on the 2005 elections not to give the absolute majority to the then Basque Government.

Gazte Abertzaleak, the young wing of the EFA party Eusko Alkartasuna, as founding members of EFAY, support the mainstream points of our common view: defence of each human right, individual or collective, including the self determination right. The wave of the future comes through the hand of Alex Salmond and SNP, and we are proud of being with you on the same European Party, because Scotland shall be one to be followed by others. We know quite well the cases of Montenegro, Lithuania, Greenland, Kosovo and others that have sustained the way on self determination in Europe. But the case of Scotland is different and the consecution of a sovereign state can be the definitive turning point to break up the Europe of the peoples.

Our common future crosses through our feet and our own idea for Basque Country, the autonomous community and the whole country has to be, as usual, peacefully and by democratic ways straight to independence. We are not alone, as well as you are not, and we shall win, for the good of our peoples, Europe and the whole humanity, because the more empowerment our communities get better life we will be able to bring them, securing the social system, health care, own education nets and control on own taxes for redistribution of profits to all the citizens, with no exception.

Many roads have been tried to solve a political problem that has deep roots in history. Basque history itself is very complex. After 30 years of autonomies in the Spanish side we know well the profits of being Spanish. So it only rest for us socializing the word of the profits of being only Basques. In brotherhood with others, as Robert Burns quoted:

Lay the proud usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in every foe!
Liberty's in every blow—
Let us do or die!

Finally I want to focus on the international view of the suggested issues and many others that conform the so called “Basque Conflict”. We shall be proud to any who may want to come and see what lays behind the curtain on Basque soil, and go boldly to every corner of the world we may be required to express our convictions and views to get a better future. Good luck with the 2010 referendum for a sovereign Scotland. Alba Obrak!
